Many drain professionals use both during the same job. Flushing nozzles help clear heavy grease-globs to restore flow, while rotating nozzles are often used for chopping up hardened grease and thoroughly cleaning grease from the pipe walls afterward.

Yes. Electric mini jetters can work very well for soft grease in residential and smaller commercial lines when properly matched with the correct hose and grease-nozzle combination. However, commercial systems with hardened grease and heavy buildup typically require the higher GPM, PSI & horsepower of a gas-powered jetter with a grease-hog nozzle.

Grease buildup often returns quickly when only the center of the blockage is cleared while residue remains on the pipe walls. Restaurant and kitchen lines usually require thorough wall cleaning to help reduce recurring grease buildup.

Heavy grease buildup may simply require more GPM and/or PSI power than your jetter is capable of, or you might just need to change to a nozzle that’s more suited to cutting up/or and scouring out the grease. Basic jetting nozzles might just draw lines in heavy grease while the right rotating nozzle can provide a 360-degree wall-to-wall cleaning.

Rotating nozzles - especially “controlled speed” models - are commonly preferred for grease because they can both chop up and clear grease logs, globs and buildup more thoroughly than standard penetrating nozzles alone. Many plumbers do use a penetrating or chisel nozzle first to restore flow, then switch to a “grease hog” type rotating nozzle with controlled rotation-speed for deeper cleaning.
