FAQs
What is the difference between descaling and basic drain cleaning?
Basic drain cleaning usually focuses on removing soft blockages and restoring flow. Descaling is more aggressive and targets hardened buildup attached directly to the pipe walls, often requiring specialized nozzles or mechanical cleaning tools.
What nozzle works best for descaling drain pipes?
Rotating Chain nozzles are often preferred to knock off chunky scale, while descaling nozzles are preferred for porous tuberculation, rust buildup and flaky scale because they provide more complete wall-to-wall cleaning during descaling. Pusher nozzles and forward-flusher nozzles are often used by experienced pros to “push” scale-debris downstream toward the city sewer, but are not recommended for new operators as they require skills and proper setup for safety. The best setup depends on pipe size, buildup severity, jetter flow, and overall pipe condition.
Can descaling damage old cast iron pipes?
In some cases, severely deteriorated pipes may require extra caution before aggressive cleaning begins. Many plumbers do a careful camera inspection of older lines first to better understand pipe condition and determine the safest cleaning approach.
Can hydro jetting remove scale buildup from cast iron pipes?
Yes. While flexible-shaft miller machines specialize in descaling, hydro jetters can indeed remove many types of scale buildup - especially porous tuberculation and “flaky’ scale - when paired with the correct nozzle, if the jetter’s GPM & PSI is adequate. Small electric-powered jetters will fall short; descaling is a job for larger engine-driven jetters, and the long hose of a jetter can typically reach much farther into long lines than a mechanical cleaning machine.
What is descaling in drain cleaning?
Descaling is the process of removing hardened mineral buildup, rust, and corrosion from inside drain and sewer pipes. It is especially common in older cast iron lines where buildup gradually restricts flow over time, and causes backups due to buildup of debris on the tuberculation.
