October 2026 - John Kukowski of Thunder Drains

In just two years, John Kukowski has transformed a one-man drain cleaning operation into a thriving Minnesota business with seven employees, an expanding fleet, and ambitious plans for the future. But for John, the success of Thunder Drains isn't just about growth. It's about doing right by customers, investing in quality equipment, and building relationships that last.

From Employee to Business Owner

John's journey into the drain cleaning industry wasn't exactly planned. After working in the trades, including concrete and plumbing, a friend's family introduced him to drain cleaning. He quickly discovered something that made the work especially rewarding: the appreciation from customers.

"Everybody thinks you're kind of the knight in shining armor when you're a drain cleaner," John explained, describing the satisfaction of showing up late at night to clear a stubborn blockage and get someone's drains flowing again.

After several years working for other companies, John decided it was time to venture out on his own. He invested in equipment, purchased a service van, and officially launched Thunder Drains on October 2, 2024.

The company's name has a personal connection to his community. In Zimmerman, Minnesota, the local high school teams are known as the Thunder. John had also started Thunder Academy, a youth basketball training program, several years earlier. When it came time to name his drain cleaning business, Thunder Drains was a natural fit.

Building a Business on Relationships

What makes Thunder Drains' growth particularly impressive is that John has accomplished it without spending money on Google advertising or traditional marketing.

Instead, he's built his business through networking, referrals, and a reputation for quality service. Today, Thunder Drains works with more than 40 plumbing companies that refer drain cleaning jobs to his team.

Approximately 75% of the company's work is commercial, and John emphasizes the importance of having skilled technicians who understand the equipment and the work they're performing.

"We're not there to upsell. We're just there to complete the job with the best equipment," John explained.

That philosophy extends to educating customers. Thunder Drains encourages customers to watch camera inspections, understand what's happening inside their pipes, and see the work being performed firsthand. For John, earning a customer's trust is more important than selling an unnecessary service.

The Right Equipment for the Right Job

John believes professional drain cleaning requires specialized equipment and knowing when to use it.

Thunder Drains relies heavily on high-speed chain cleaning technology, turning to hydro jetting when the job calls for it. Among the tools in their fleet are several Drain Invader electric jetters, which are particularly useful for tackling stubborn grease buildup and longer sections of restricted pipe. For John, having the right equipment and dependable support from the suppliers behind it is an important part of getting the job done right.

The American Dream Is Still Alive

Despite everything Thunder Drains has accomplished in just two years, John isn't slowing down. He has ambitious plans to expand throughout the Midwest and potentially beyond, bringing his commitment to quality service and customer relationships to new communities.

When asked what he hopes people will remember about his journey, John's answer was simple:

"That the American Dream is still alive, and that you can do it if you really want to."

Congratulations to John Kukowski and the entire Thunder Drains team on being our October 2026 Drain Invader of the Month! We're proud to recognize hardworking professionals who are raising the standard of the drain cleaning industry and proving that doing the job right still matters.
